Job purpose (Info):
Risk Management at Wates Group is in its development and evolution phase with the organisation still to achieve maturity in this area.
It is recognised by the SES WPS Board that the increasing scale and complexity of the business, along with the evolving legislative landscape, mean that the need for a detailed and holistic view of risk is immediate.
The holder will work closely with the SES WPS Board (particularly the MD, FD and CD) and liaise with leadership from across the business to develop risk methodologies, procedures and tools, assess risk appetite and ensure effective risk identification, management and mitigation (where appropriate) as well as providing support to the business as it develops the appropriate governance and risk reporting procedures for a business of SES’s WPS’s scale, and considering its divisionalised status as a separate standalone business unit within the Wates Group from January 20252026.

Work alongside the Finance DirectorCommercial Director and Group Senior Risk Manager (with oversight from Group Head of Assurance) to develop and implement a comprehensive risk management framework and reporting capability embedding key risk indicators, identifying emerging risks and preparing mitigation plans for risks falling outside of risk appetite

Build cross-functional relationships and provide relevant information to support the activities of the Group Head of Assurance and Chair of Risk Committee in delivering the Committee material – this will include preparation of reports, presentations, dashboards, risk intelligence and analysis

Manage and maintain risk registers (including mapping of key project risks into a consolidated Business Unit view) and guide risk owners across SES WPS on defining risk causes, events and impacts, assessing the likelihood and impact of the risks and developing appropriate response.

An analytical and detail-oriented mindset, ensuring thorough assessment and management of risks. Experience of construction&maintenance industry, and construction&maintenance accounting would be desirable, but not fundamental. |

No direct reports initially – responsible for building relationships across the Wates Group and SES WPS to ensure robust identification and reporting of risk. |
Specific SHEQ accountabilities (Info):
No specific responsibilities but is expected to be aware of and promote/support the Group’s initiatives with regards to: H&S, including the Zero Harm culture; and ESG, including aim of becoming a leader in sustainable construction, maintenance and development. Specific experience of H&S in a construction maintenance environment would be an advantage but is not essential. |

- Knowledge (Info):
Relevant risk management experience (3yrs minimum). Technically minded individual with a detailed understanding of risk methodologies, mitigation processes and techniques within a corporate environment.

- Qualifications (Info):
A recognised professional qualification such as ICAEW/ICAS/ACCA/CIMA or IRM (Institute of Risk Management) is a pre-requisite for the role. |
- Skills (Info):
Strong relationship-building Commercial awareness Analytical, with the ability to use quantitative risk analysis tools A strong communicator who is able to articulate technical concepts to a wider audience |
